A great voice can be a huge turn-on. A man with a deep baritone or a woman with a sexy purr will evoke one image; a nasal whine or aggressive, near-barking delivery will provoke a very different reaction.
What new insights can you get from a voice message beyond those presented in a traditional text profile? Here are three tips to help you decode the hidden messages in someone's voice:
1. Energy is audible
Lack of energy is, too. Your match is supposed to be trying to attract your attention. If he or she sounds like they just woke up from a nap, it's completely appropriate to question their enthusiasm.
Be on guard, too, against anyone whose profile lists a gazillion sports and other high-energy activities but who sounds suspiciously like one of life's spectators. Keep your ears open for someone who sounds upbeat, animated and eager to make new connections.
2. Sound advice: Listen for honesty
The vast majority of people you meet — both online and off — are genuine, honest and looking to meet other sincere matches. Still, it's smart to listen for telltale hesitation on certain key words (especially those related to marital status).
Mispronunciation of the words that so impressed you in the text profile could indicate that this person isn't quite the intellectual you'd imagined. A halting delivery or defensive tone isn't a great sign, either. Trust your instincts and avoid anyone whose voice raises your suspicions or lowers your comfort level.
3. Communication style counts
Singles focus quite a lot on the online dating wild card — physical chemistry. But communication chemistry has to be there, too. Do you like the speed at which this person speaks? Is his or her accent or vocal quality appealing to you? Do you hear "music" in this voice? Does this laugh make you smile?
When you find yourself thinking, wow, I really want to talk with this one, you know you're on to something. Go for it! |
